Description from the creator

When something unexpected happens to us, our bodies react first, then our emotions and, finally, our cognitive processes. But sometimes, the experience gets trapped between the physical and emotional responses. In other words, our brains are unable to make sense of the experience, so they continue to behave as they did when the experience first happened without closing the case, so to speak. This is exactly what happens when we develop fears, emanating from traumatic experiences.

For example, a child may hear something in the night. If the child is afraid of the dark, the child freaks out! He pulls the covers over his head, safe and sound in his bed. His reaction has been to flee rather than stay and fight, and fair enough too! Then, as his body and emotive systems attempt to put the pieces back together, his mind too, attempts to cognitively process the experience so that he may be better prepared the next time he hears similar sounds.
