Instead of throwing away your eggshells and giving it to Landfill why not recycle/re-use/ re-purpose the egg shells into your garden to help your plants grow stronger!
Eggshells are made up of 96% Calcium carbonate and can be used in your garden in a number of ways.
The Calcium is an essential nutrient for building cell wells and as protein synthesis, helps water transfer and carbohydrate translocation.
Fertiliser
The calcium in eggshells helps plants grow stronger, so add your eggshells to your compost
or you sprinkle them around your plants as is, they will breakdown overtime and through this period will help to act as a mulch as well.
Wash your eggshells and leave in the sun until you have enough, I generally leave them out for a month so I end up having a good bucket of 100 or so.
Then put them in the blender and crush them up nice and fine.
Now you can add them to your compost.
Pest Deterrent
Coarse eggshells sprinkled around plants will help deter slugs and snails, the sharp edges of the shells will discourage them from that area.
Wash your eggshells and leave in the sun until you have enough, I generally leave them out for a month so I end up having a good bucket of 100 or so.
Lightly crush them with your hands.
Sprinkle them around your plants where you're finding snails/slugs
Mulch
Eggshells are great for adding to your mulch, as they breakdown calcium will be taken down to your plants. So i call it an active mulch
Wash your eggshells and leave in the sun until you have enough, I generally leave them out for a month so I end up having a good bucket of 100 or so.
Lightly crush 50% with your hands and the other 50% put in the blender. This way you have a mixture of both which is better for mulch in the long run as they will breakdown at different times giving your plants a steady amount of calcium
Sprinkle them around your plants
