If you want to keep your portable air conditioner working at peak capacity, you’ll need to winterize it before storing it away at the end of summer. I explain how to do that:

Unplug and Store the Power Cord
Break Down the Window Kit
Clean the Filters
Drain the Tank
Storing Your Portable Air Conditioner

Have a large room that needs cooling? Whynter LLC specializes in large-power portable air conditioners for bigger rooms. Its 14,000 British Thermal Units (BTU) model, the ARC-14SH, can cool a room up to 500 square feet. BTUs measure the power of the unit; the higher the BTUs, the more powerful the portable AC and the larger the room it can cool.

This Whynter mobile air conditioner also functions as a dehumidifier and a heater, making it a nice choice if you live in an area that gets too cold as well as too hot. The dehumidifier can remove a massive 101 pints of moisture from the air. It has auto-drain technology to evaporate most of the moisture, cutting down on how much you'll have to drain the unit itself, although you will need to drain it in high humidity situations or when using it as a dehumidifier. It has a warning light to alert you if the water reservoir becomes too full.

The Whynter ARC-14SH is a dual-hose system, which provides more efficiency, especially for higher-power portable ACs. One hose pulls in air from the outside to cool the compressor, while the second hose vents the heat out of the system and the room. It can make for a noisier machine, and this system rates at under 56 dBAs, the high end of normal for most machines. However, the dual-hose system means there's no negative airflow from the room, so if your room is closed off, you won't get hissing noise as air is being pulled in from cracks in the door. You also won't pull in warm air from other areas of the house.

It has a high energy efficiency rating of 11.2, as well as a programmable timer so you can pick your temperature for certain times of the day; for example, you can set the unit to cool to a higher temperature when the room is not being used. The unit has three fan speeds and comes with a remote control.
