How to Write a Song About Yourself?
How to write a song about yourself? Do you ever feel like writing about yourself but you feel like there's really not much to say? Well in this video, I will share with you 1 formula that will help you write lyrics about yourself with ease even if you think there's nothing to say. If you're at least 10, 15, or 20 years old, you've already lived a more decade. There are definitely things about your life worth mentioning. I'll share with you how you can make ideas flow easily.

Before we get started, this is a formula. But it doesn't mean all songwriting has to be done this way. I believe songwriting is an art and not a science. Follow my formulas in this channel and you'll find it easier to come up with your own different styles of writing.
1. What about yourself?
-What about yourself do you wanna write about? Do you want to write about your depression? Are you a happy kid? How you are as a lover? How you are as a daughter? Do you wanna write about your poor social skills?
-You have to pick one thing. It's not a rule. But personally, I think writing about one thing is better than writing about many things.
-The goal of songwriting is transference of emotion. It's easier to make people feel one thing than one million different things.
-If you write about one specific thing or emotion, it will be easier to rub it in your listeners' heads.
-Writing about one thing also makes it easier for you to write a more cohesive piece. You can stop worrying about your song ending up pointing to many different directions which easily confuses people.
-For this example, I'm choosing "poor social skills"
2. Think about one simple story.
-Whenever you think about whatever you chose in the previous step, what story do you immediately remember?
-Think carefully about small details of that event.
-How did it make you feel? What were the characters of your story wearing? Was it in a hot, sunny afternoon in San Francisco?
-These details are important because they can be used in your song.
-Mine is this: "There was a party that I went to just because my close friend invited me. I didn't know most of the people there. I was introduced to a group of people who I've never seen before. One girl asked me about myself. Although I talked like a normal person, I felt like standing on thin ice. I haven't always been like this but some events in my life caused me to always overthink about my conversations. Like did I blow it? Did I blow it again like I did last time? Did I push them away? Did I say something stupid?"
3. Write the first 2 lines like this.
-Illustrate the story with imagery. How does the situation taste, smell, look, feel, sound like?
-Tell your story descriptively. You can say "I broke my jaw and it hurt". But you can also say "My dad swang his fists more than the swing set in the park".
-In the beginning, writing creative stuff like that will feel forced. But in the future, although it will always be hard, it will come out more naturally.
-Again, for 2 lines, tell your story descriptively.
-My story was: A stranger asked me about myself. The conversation was okay but I hate doing this. I'd rather be at home.
-This is mine:
"sweaty conversation though my back is cold as ice
tricky misdirections to withdraw me off her sight"
-I used "sweaty conversations" and "my back is cold as ice" to describe my nervousness. One cool trick you can use with your songs is to have "black and whites". These are 2 opposite things that support one common point.
"Her eyes and words are so icy
Oh but she burns" -Hozier
4. Write your third and fourth line like this.
-What do you feel about your story? What are your relfections?
-Example:
"I see trees of green, red roses too
I see them bloom for me and you
And I think to myself
what a wonderful world" -Louis Armstrong
-The first two lines perfectly describe the situation. The second half of the 4 lines describe how he felt.
Here's mine:
"i blew it bad last time
i blew it bad last time"
-The cool thing about songwriting is you can repeat lines and it will sound great. Just make sure not to do it too much.
5. Another example
-I'm going to end this lesson with one more example.
-You can talk about another situation if you want, but you can also talk about the same scenario but in a different point of view or in a more specific manner.
"she asked me to describe myself, but nothing's there to say
inside my head's a dusty shelf, im not used to this. i pray.
get me off this place
get me off this place"
Again, this is the Lyric Nerd. Good luck with your songwriting!
