Writing your own obituary, well before your demise, can be a wonderful exercise in self-discovery. Petra Orloff, founder of the obituary and eulogy writing service Beloved, provides great insights into what makes a great life short story.

At the 2019 Before I Die New Mexico Festival, she spoke in Santa Fe and Albuquerque. She helped attendees understand how to make an obituary engaging, enlightening, and fun to read.

Orloff provided an outline of tips and questions to draw upon when writing your obituary. Here are a few examples:

1. Outline the obituary like a news story, including the elements of Who, What, Where, When and How.
2. Include information about memorial service details.
3. Use questions to help draw out stories and words of wisdom.

A five-page PDF with the full listing of tips and questions is available for download through this web page at the Before I Die New Mexico website: wp.me/p97kRi-5yU
