Gum Arabic is typically thought of as a tool in watercolour but this film shows how it can be used as a resist with oil paint to protect base layers which can be revealed later. By painting Gum Arabic on a gessoed surface, either white gesso or gesso tinted with a colour, you will create a mask over the area. When that is dry, you can paint over the canvas freely and later go back and rub away the Gum Arabic with a soft, damp cloth. This will reveal the earlier marks you made with the Gum Arabic, providing an interesting layered effect in your painting.
