How to Keep Your Indoor Cat Happy?
Cats are quiet and often quite indifferent, but that doesn't mean they don't enjoy a good time playing with their owners. In fact, cats display different signs for telling us they are bored. It's vital that owners learn how to recognize these signs and know what to do to make their cats happy, as prolonged boredom has negative effects on a cat's life such as destructive behavior or even depression.
There are different ways in which our little felines show us they are in the mood for a game, some being more subtle than others. In any case, here's a list with frequent signs of a bored cat.
* Sleeping all the time
* Excessive appetite/almost no appetite
* Scratching furniture
* Fighting other cats
* Eliminating on the floor (not using the litter box)
* Excessive shedding
* Grooming more than necessary
With these behaviors, cats express their desire for interaction and attention.
Now…….
What to do when a cat is bored?
When cats spend most of the day alone in the house they can easily feel bored or even anxious. However, I also understand letting them play outside can be dangerous.
Luckily, there are easy and not so expensive ways to keep indoor cats physically and mentally active. From games to stimulate their intelligence, to objects where they can safely release energy. Here are a few examples.
1 Scratching pad or post
Cats love to scratch, as they need it to keep their nails healthy. These scratching posts are currently high in demand because they are safe for cats to release some energy and stretch their bodies a bit. Besides, you no longer have to worry about damages to your furniture.
2 Food hunts
Hide a treat in different places each day for your cat to find it as quickly as he can. This way, your cat will be entertained while you are not at home. A couple of treats are enough though, as they are not the most healthy food.
3 Toys on a fishing pole
Having your cat pursue a toy on a fishing pole is one of the best games to make your kitty have a fun time. You can buy the toy that best suits your pet's personality and play with him for around 15 minutes twice a day.
Shining a laser on the floor for your cat to chase the light is a cool alternative for your cat to exercise while having fun. Additionally, it's highly recommended to buy toys for your cat to play alone whenever he's feeling lonely at home.
4 Climbing/perching
A super fun way for your cat to never get bored is to buy him a sturdy cat tree or installing window perches. All cats love to be on elevated locations but even more jumping or climbing to reach those locations. There are multiple alternatives for climbing structures you can install, what's important is to make sure they are entirely safe before allowing your cat to play with them.
