Many dogs don't seem to know how to calm themselves down. They may pant frequently at home with little-to-no extra stimulation, or they may go nuts at the sight of another dog or the mailman and then they can't settle down for several minutes. This technique is best used to help your dog calm down after a crazed episode (barking at the mailman, seeing another dog, etc), or in stressful situations (such as while at the vet). It can be used in combination with other techniques to teach over-all calmness.
