How to train dog to run along with your bicycle off leash.
ChannelDog Training C.P.R.Description from the creator
This video is about training a dog to run next to your bicycle.
This is not about dog being attached to the bicycle.
This is kind of a "Heel" command, but "heel to the Bike".
I call it "Side"
"Walk" is when the dog walks next to you on your left.
and "Side" is when it runs next to your bike on your right ( relaxed Heel command).
There are couple of things you should be aware of before you attempt to ride with the dog on your side.
THIS IS DANGEROUS!
1) Be on constant alert and be prepared that the dog is going to skip, get distracted - pull on the side or suddenly stop.
Especially the young and active dogs.
2) Be careful not to run your dog exhausted. Especially city dogs that spend 3/4 of the day sleeping on a couch. With the older dogs - make sure they are healthy enough to run along with your bicycle.
3) make sure you can ride the bike. Specifically that you are comfortable riding the bicycle with one hand.
So consider YOUR safety and your DOG'S physical shape.
If all is good then riding a bicycle with your dogs is a great way to spend a day!
Running is the best exercise for the dog - it helps to tone the muscles, develop lungs and clear the GIT ( guts so to speak).
(in the countries with the right side traffic - dog must run on your right side. Away from the traffic so to speak).
Make sure to walk your dog longer than usual before starting the training. IF the dog is tired it will be easier.
Start with riding the bicycle slowly in a park in circles with your dog on the leash. Do not even say any commands at first – just let your dog get used to it.
Then introduce the commands.
I use the following commands:
SIDE – dog comes and sits on the right side of the bike
FREE – General release command. The command that you use to let the dog free. “Dismissed”
SLOW – well this is just s gentle way top calm down the dog if it runs to fast before saying “side”.
PULL – I also let the dog pull my bicycle. Especially in the beginning when he has too much energy.
SILENT STOP – this is default training: when I stopped the dog must come and sit next to me.
Any time when you are out the dog must be aware where you are. NOT YOU should be watching the dog, but THE DOG must be watching you.
Have fun and be careful!
Consistency - Persistency - Repetition!
