How to Choose a Washing Machine

Having a reliable washing machine gives you peace of mind. But they’re not all created equal. Some are more reliable than others. And some have unique features. In this video, we explain how to choose the best washing machine for you.

Price:

Most new washing machines cost between $250 to $2,500 depending on the brand, the size, and the features it has. For most people, finding a washing machine under $1,000 should be relatively easy.

Size:

Washing machines can be quite large or quite small. You should measure the space you have available ahead of time so you can get one that’s a perfect fit. Most washing machines are about 27 inches wide; bigger ones can be 30 inches or more.

Capacity:

Related to size, the capacity of the washer determines how many clothes you can fit inside at one time. If you have a large family, you might want a machine with more capacity. For reference, a washing machine with a capacity of 4.5 cubic feet or greater can fit a king-size comforter.

Type:

You’ll have to decide if you want a front-load washing machine or the top-load washing machine. Here are all the types you may choose from:

Agitator Top-Loader (less expensive, use a lot of water)

High Efficiency Top-Loader (not gentle on fabrics, longer wash times)

Front-Loader (use less water, gentle on fabrics, longer wash times)
Compact Front-Loader (fits in smaller spaces, can be expensive)

Features:

While everyone has their own preferences, here ere are a few features that we believe will come in handy:

Automatic dispenser: Put in your detergent, fabric softener, or bleach, and the machine will automatically disperse it at the right time.

Automatic Temperature Control: Have more control over the temperature of the water for each load you run.

Stainless Steel Tub: Rather than a plastic tub, a stainless steel tub will not wear out as fast and does not leave clothes as wet when the cycle ends.

End of Cycle Chime: While some find this annoying, it can be very convenient if you’re in another room and have forgotten about your laundry.
