The best way to deal with dwg is to import them as "drawing object", you can do that by simply dragging and dropping (be sure yo adjust the edges, scale if needed ,etc), and then you can use them in your project to trace them / compare them ..etc.

Please note that these dwgs by default are not stored in the file (you can however change that in the drawing settings - an option that says "Store Drawings in the project file".
