The first and most important sign of trouble is your webcam’s indicator light — if it’s flashing when you haven’t turned it on, someone could have hacked your computer and got to your camera.

That isn’t always the case, though. Some browser extensions may cause the light to flash if they have permission to access the webcam. Just to be sure, here’s what you should do.

- Check processes
1) Go to the Task Manager and open the Processes tab
2) Check if the webcam process is running
3) If unsure, restart the PC and see if the webcam process starts automatically

- Check applications
1) Try to run the webcam
2) If you get the message that your camera is already in use, check if you have programs open that could be using it
3) If you can’t identify the culprit, there’s a good chance your webcam was hacked

- Scan for malware
