In brief

You’ll build a striking wood-and-string sculpture that appears to float, using tensegrity—a clever balance of tension and compression. This hands-on project reveals how physics creates the illusion of defying gravity, perfect for curious makers and physics enthusiasts.

Questions & answers

What materials do I need?

Wood battens and strong strings or cords.

Is a template provided?

No, the video uses a pre-made template for the structure’s shape.

Description from the creator

We made a sculpture out of wood batten based on the principle of tensional integrity (tensegrity for short), where all the strings are under continuous tension. The result is the impression that the sculpture levitates.

Tensegrity is a design principle that applies when a discontinuous set of compression elements is opposed and balanced by a continuous tensile force, thereby creating an internal prestress that stabilizes the entire structure. Puzzling physics structures that seem to defy the very laws of gravity.
