Welcome to my video about how to recover deleted files on your mac. In this video I’m going to show you different ways you can get back the files you’ve deleted whether by accident or on purpose, just in case you ever need to.
First thing to be aware of is that when trying to recover or undelete a file that has already been deleted, that the sooner you try to get it back the more likely it is to be successful. Undeleting or recovering a file is never a guaranteed process.
First thing to check if you’ve deleted a file that you want to recover, is to check out the trash can. When you first delete a file it goes to the trash can, then when the trash can is emptied it’s deleted. To open the trash to see if your file is still there, locate the trash can icon on your mac’s dock & click. If the file you’re looking to recover is in the trash can, just right click or control click & choose put back to recover the file. Now it will be back in the location it was deleted from.
The next step only applies if you regularly backup your Mac. If you do regular backups then you can search through your backups & bring the file back. Many people use the built in Time Machine backup feature that comes with macOS. For more detailed information on Time Machine I’ll leave a link in the description.
If the file you’re looking to recover is not in the trash can & can’t be found in a time machine backup, then this is where things get more difficult. macOS doesn’t come with any software that lets you recover deleted files by default, but there are many 3rd party applications that will do this for you. One that I’ve had a good experience with is Disk Drill by a company called cleverFiles. Plus it has some great additional features that can be useful as well such as helping you create a macOS boot installer drive & you can even create a backup clone disk image with it. But of course the best part of the software is the ability to recover deleted files. To use Disk Drill to recover a file first download & install the app. Once the App is installed run the app. Then you’ll need to run a scan so the software can search the computer for any files it can recover. To do this locate the drive the file was saved on. Disk drill can be used on your mac’s hard drive or any external storage drive such as a usb thumb drive or hard drive. You can even use it on an iPhone if you like! In this example I’m running the software on my MacBook Pro that has a bootcamp partition & I’m only concerned with recovering a file from the macOS partition, so I’m going to click the drop down arrow to see the partitions on the drive & choose to recover files on my Macintosh HD. Once you’ve located the drive you want to scan, click the recover button beside it. Then Disk Drill will scan the drive to look for any files it can recover.
Once the scan is complete look through the list of results & locate the file you want to recover. I’d recommend changing the “recover to” location to make your recovered file easier to find, in this example I’m changing it to the desktop. For this example I’m using an image file called TestPic.png. Once located select the file by putting a check in the box to the left. Then click recover in the upper right. Now the picture has been recovered! Disk drill will work with any file type!
It’s been my experience that utilities like Disk Drill often work most of the time. I had some communication with the company that makes disk drill telling them how I like they’re product & was going to suggest it in this video & they were nice enough to provide a promo code for those that are interested in buying it! You can try it out for free with some limitations, but if you’re a student or use your Mac for anything work related I’d recommend purchasing it so you’ll never be without that data you really need when you need it. Plus it comes with some other great features like duplicate file scanning & the ability to create a backup image of your Mac. Creating a backup disk image is a great way to do backups so you’re never really without your Mac if it crashes, you just install the backup image & you’re up & running again!
