Smooth, well adjusted gears save a lot of hassle on the trail and can also save your ride; while poorly adjusted gears may not end your ride, one jump the wrong way and you could write off your wheel or even your frame. So, it's a good thing to stay on top of.

The indexing and adjustment of your gears is done using the cable tension, barrel adjusters and limit screws. Sometimes, an old cable or worn out chain/cassette will be causing your problems, so make sure you check these too.

Unless you're replacing your cables, you won't need too many tools for this job; in fact, a multi tool with a range of allen keys and philips screwdriver will cover it.
