If you've decided you're ready to break the news, get some help from these pointers.

Step 1:
Follow up your announcement with assurances that you are taking precautions against pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. This will let your parents know you're acting responsibly.

Step 2:
Consider whether you'd feel better approaching just one parent with your news. Either way, pick a time when everyone is relaxed and no one has to be anywhere.

Step 3:
Start by saying you want to talk to them about something serious. That way, you immediately send the message that you are not taking sex lightly. After that, calmly and directly break the news.

Step 4:
Listen respectfully to what they have to say; you won't win points for maturity if you interrupt, sulk, or yell. Besides, you just might learn something.

Tip
If you and your parents reach a standoff, end the discussion by promising you'll take what they've said into consideration.

Step 5:
If your parents were unable or unwilling to answer any questions you had about sex, seek the advice of another adult you trust, like a teacher, a counselor or a relative.

Step 6:
End on a positive note by reminding them that you didn't have to tell them, but that you wanted to be honest out of love and respect.

Did You Know?
Teens who talk with their parents about sex are less likely to face an unwanted pregnancy and more likely to use protection.
