How To Clean A Needlepoint Wall Hanging
ChannelDavid MavilioDescription from the creator
This video will give you the basic steps necessary to clean a hand woven needlepoint wall hanging.
Most needlepoint weaves, especially older ones are made of natural fibers-wool, cotton, jute, linen-these natural fibers are more prone to shrinkage and dye bleeding.
Always test the fibers prior to wetting the entire piece. If you see signs of shrinkage or dye bleeding I suggest you contact a professional who has experience cleaning delicate, older weaves.
A great detergent that is gentle and effective is Woolite Laundry detergent.
Mix it according to directions and apply it to the piece using a terry towel, soft sponge or horse hair brush. Gently work the detergent into the fibers.
To rinse use a spray bottle with 1:1 ratio of water and white vinegar.
Spray the vinegar solution and immediately follow with a wet/dry vacuum to remove excess moisture and detergent residue. Do this several times until all lose soiling is removed.
Make sure to speed dry using gentle fans.
Remember, if you see signs of dye bleeding or shrinkage call a professional.
