Sometimes it's easier to remember the conversion 5 miles = 8km rather than 1 mile = 1.6km.

So in example 1 you need to convert 15 miles into km. First divide 15 by 5 to give 3 (so 15 miles is 3 times larger than 5 miles). Then multiply the 8 by the 3 to give 24 km (since the km side must also be 3 times larger).
