In this video, I give you a glimpse into my coaching services. My client asks how she can best show emotion in her story. I explain how to express feelings in words by using a conversational tone.

When you read a book or listen to a speech, what resonates with you? Is it facts and figures, well-constructed arguments, or empty platitudes? Nope, none of those. You’re interested in feelings – how does what’s being said make you feel?

Writers have to learn how to express feelings in words to help readers understand characters and plot. Speakers have to take things one step further. As a speaker, you also express emotion in your delivery. Step into your story – don’t stand outside as a commentator. Experience feelings first-hand, and your face will organically follow your emotion.

My approach is to take a conversational tone in both writing and speaking. You’ll find that people warm up to you quickly and easily when you speak off the cuff – when you’re more concerned with what you’re saying than how you’re saying it. Here’s a storytelling trick: Pretend you’re talking to your spouse across the dinner table, or to your best friend over a glass of wine.

Avoid overused words that have lost their impact – “fantastic,” “awesome,” “humiliated.” Instead, paint a word picture to show your audience how you feel. Find your own unique way of speaking and then speak naturally from the heart – that’s how to express feelings in words and engage your audience.

Write your story the way you talk and convey it in a conversational tone. If you want your audience to really listen, be real with them. Don’t just tell your story – tell them how it makes you feel. #BusinessCommunicationSpeaker
