Click Follow on the Timeline of the person or list you want to see updates from. You'll only see the option to follow people who allow people to follow them.
It's a way to see public updates from the people you're interested in.
In case you are wondering, the Follow button works the same way 'Subscribe' does.
You don't need to follow your facebook friends because you automatically follow them once you become connected as friends on facebook.
