New growth begins in the early spring as the sap first starts to rise in the tree.

Cut through the bark around the circumference of the branch using a sharp knife.

Make perpendicular cuts through the bark between these two cuts, and pry the bark away.

This is the location where new roots will begin to grow. Rooting hormone usually is not required when air layering trees but can help speed up the growth of roots.

Wrap a ball of sphagnum moss about the size of a tennis ball around the bare wood of the girdled branch. The moss should be soaked overnight before application, but squeeze out excess water when placing it on the branch. Cover the moss ball with clear plastic, providing pressure so that there is no air gap between the moss and wood. Seal each end tightly so that no water can escape or enter.

Harvest the new sapling when new root tips can be seen all the way around the moss ball. Cut the branch below the new root ball, plant in a container and fertilize regularly to encourage the sapling to establish a larger root system.
