How to Negotiate Salary After Job Offer
ChannelFinancial LiftDescription from the creator
I'll give my advice on how to negotiate salary after job offer and the best tips to control the negotiation process. I go in depth and give examples so that you can actually use this advice!
1:17 - The BEST tip to negotiating a better salary after a job offer
Now I’ll start with honestly what I think is one of the biggest tips especially for people negotiating their first job or are young and that’s to ignore any kind of hard numbers or points they may be making. Too many times I’ve heard people say they're accepting a job at $40k because they were told by the company, that’s our policy and they can't change it. Or, here’s an offer and we need to know if you accept right now or not because we have other qualified candidates.
Now, both of those points could be true but more often than not, its not true. Plus think about if you would even want to work at a place like that. I recommend push back and ask for a higher salary and make sure to not ask a yes or no question. Its easy to ask, is there any flexibility, but then its too easy for the company to say no.
5:01 - Know the Salary you DESERVE
So I know saying what you deserve may seem a little entitled but the reason I phrase it this way, is too many people just base their salary range on what is typical or average for their job title. The problem with this though, you could be working at a place that has a little bit more workload than typical.
Maybe it’s a poorly run company, or its just a small company, whatever the reason, if I get paid what is average, but do more than average work, then I’m basically destined to end up leaving that job at some point down the road.
I will say that finding the average salary for your experience and job title is a good place to at least start when it comes to negotiating a salary after a job offer.
8:41 - Negotiate salary based on value
Here's a secret negotiating tip that applies to salary but also applies to basically anything. Try to negotiate based on value, and not based on a number alone. What I mean is that sometimes people get hung up on trying to convince the company, that you should be paid $50k for the job title at hand.
Rather, talk about the additional value you bring to the company and why that translates into a better salary. At the end of the day, if you have job skills that are nice but don't really bring value to the company, then its basically irrelevant. But, if I can relate that skill to time saved for the company, then that skill carries more weight now.
12:11 - Be likeable!
Don’t underestimate the importance of personal skills when negotiating a salary for a job offer. So this can be referred to as soft skills or relationship skills, at the end of the day, we’re talking about likeability. I have sat in on meetings where a worker was passed on and they went with the more expensive candidate just because they were more likeable.
The funny thing about this, is how likeable can someone be in just a few interviews. But that’s just it, it honestly doesn’t even take that much. Try to make a funny light hearted joke or talk about something pretty universal.
15:44 Leverage your advantages
The next tip is to leverage different advantages you have and what I mean by this is maybe you have another job offer, leverage that. Maybe you don’t need a new job, you just want one. Leverage that. And I’m not saying bring out those points explicitly with the exception of saying, you have another job offer on the table.
17:56 - Phycological tricks to negotiate better
1) Talk about how close you are to an agreement
2) Talk about how they would lose out rather than what they would gain
3) Anchor to a higher initial salary offer
