What is tearing? Does it really hurt as bad as you would think? How to prevent?
Here are three ways to minimize or prevent vaginal tearing in birth if you are a first time mom or a seasoned mom.
1. Take your time pushing after your cervix is completely open
Slow controlled push especially when head is crowning
2. Change positions
Don’t push on your back
Push standing, squatting, hands and knees, or on your left side.
3. Perineal massage or warm compress now and in labor
Stimulates tissue, brings blood supply to tissue, and possibly helps stretch tissue.
Not a lot of research to show that perineal massage during pregnancy helps, but it doesn't hurt to try and might help your peace of mind.
