How to Prune a New Cherry Tree by Grow Health TV

Learn how to prune a brand new cherry tree to open center.

Take care with the knee high pruning of fruit trees. Sometimes it does not work out, especially with trees over two years old or over 1/2 inch caliper without notching the trunk and applying Gibberellic acid (GA4+7) combined with 6-benzyladenine (BA) or 6-benzyladenine. Fruit trees of a lessor caliper and under two years old can be notched with success without using chemicals. Some types of fruit trees will grow new branching when notched, and without using chemicals later in life.

If you live in a zone with heavy seasonal rain and humidity, or heavy rain and humidity most of the year, I recommend pruning in early summer during a dry period with lower humidity (below 50 percent) for several days (two weeks is even better). However, if you just planted the fruit tree that has not been pruned by the seller (bare-root trees are usually pruned ), pruning at planting will give you the best growth and give your tree roots a better/faster start, decreasing the risk of tree loss. Potted fruit trees from big-box stores almost always need to be pruned at planting.

Spare Branches: Normally, you would remove the branching below the 3 scaffold branches on an open center tree, but I will not until a later date (watch video). Though unconventional for open center method, you could also keep some lower branches if the spacing is good, giving you more production. If this tree was pruned the central leader method, it would have several branching tiers or whorls spaced equally up the central leader. Alternatively, you could even decide to keep the 4th branch so you would have 4 instead of 3 main scaffold branches for your open centered tree. The choice is yours.
