John is pruning a persimmon trees to be more productive.

Johns response follows:

I can only speak for persimmon and pear growing on full size rootstocks in the hot humid Southeast. This would not exactly apply to cooler summer shorter growing season climates like the coastal Pacific Northwest or to dwarf rootstocks.

Persimmon has vigorous vegetative growth, like pears. Persimmon requires dormant pruning. But, it mostly requires multiple growing season removals of the the vigorous vertical vegetative growth. That growth takes sugar away from the developing fruit and shades the fruiting wood leading to alternate bearing , a weak branch structure, and an unmanageable height. The fruiting wood needs sun to build carbohydrates for next year’s fruit. By pruning the vertical growth and leaving a few buds, those buds are forced to shoot out horizontally. The resulting sideways twiggy growth is the fruiting wood. This must be done multiple times during the growing season. So, yes, one prunes in full leaf if fruit production is the goal.

Near the end of the clip John talks a little bit about the starfruit tree.
