Windows Defender Antivirus helps protect your PC against malware (malicious software) like viruses, spyware, and other potentially unwanted software.


Malware can infect your PC without your knowledge and it might install itself from an email message, when you connect to the Internet, or when you install certain apps using a USB flash drive, CD, DVD, or other removable media. Some malware can also be programmed to run at unexpected times, not only when it's installed.
Windows Defender is included with Windows and helps keep malware from infecting your PC in two ways:

• Providing real-time protection. Windows Defender notifies you when malware tries to install itself or run on your PC. It also notifies you when apps try to change important settings.
•
• Providing anytime scanning options. Windows Defender automatically scans your PC for installed malware on a regular basis, but you can also start a scan whenever you want. Windows Defender automatically removes (or temporarily quarantines) anything that's detected during a scan.

So lets get started.

So, to to turn on windows defender in windows 10 operating system we have two methods to use.
Number 1.
Using Group Policy Console
To enable windows defender from group policy, go to Run and type gpedit.msc.
And yes group policy will only work in Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions.
We have to navigate to Windows defender Antivirus and to navigate it, expand computer configuration then administrative templates then windows components and then windows defender antivirus.
The best thing about windows defender is, now we can manage it via group policy, intune and System Center 2012 R2

Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Defender Antivirus

So, in windows defender antivirus look for Turn off Windows defender Antivirus and open it by double clicking on it. Or right click and click edit.
And now you can click on Enable and click Ok. So I have enabled Windows defender from Local Group Policy.
If this is managed by Centralize GPO, then its not possible to enable from Local GPO.

Second method is with registry and we are now going to enable windows defender with registry.
To enable it first of all go to run box by pressing windows key and r and type regedit
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows Defender
Click on the windows defender and on the right page, right click and click on Add dword value.
Type DisableAntiSpyware and type 0 to enable windows defender.
Now,

We can see, windows defender is enable and just click on the update. To update the antivirus definitions.
