Linux Bash For Beginners Tutorial 13 How To Change File Dates

In this Linux bash for beginners tutorial we are going to modify the recorded dates associated with a file.

The linux filesystem records three types of dates per file and directory.

- The modify date records when the file was modified.
- The change date records when the file was changed.
- The access date records when the file was last accessed.

A files modify date can be altered without the file being accessed. When this happens the files change date records this information.

Using the Linux touch command a files modify and access date can be altered.

We are going to explore the recorded dates and I will explain how they can be altered using the touch command.

We are also going to use the Linux stat command to read the files status.
