Description from the creator

I love machine learning and these days, I find myself learning more and more when artificial intelligence is used to provide me answers to the questions that I am asking and even to understand things that I cannot see or articulate.

Back in 2013, I had a job from a nonprofit organization called LabTV to record 800 video stories, each one exploring the work of a medical lab researcher. The goal of each video was to positively influence those interested in medicine to join the profession of medical research rather than to become a physician or surgeon. There are many studying medicine at the undergraduate and graduate school level who aren't comfortable being practitioners. They want to find answers rather than "practice medicine.". That is medical research.

A production team and I created these individual video portraits. This gentleman, a computer programmer, combined his fascination with programming with his dedication to humanity to use artificial intelligence and machine learning to help physicians, surgeons, and other researchers to learn more - faster - about our bodies and about our health and about how we can catch signs earlier that things are going awry.

Although this video was made in 2013, what he is talking about is even more active in medical research today. He was fortunate enough to work at an NIH (National Institutes of Health) research center where the head of his laboratory was the famous Dr. Francis Collins, one of those who decoded the human genome and was for a long time the head of the NIH.

During that year, I interviewed so many folks who were leading research in the medical area and as a result, I became convinced that our future, short-term and longer-term (I hope that I am there to see this) is leading to a Sputnik Moment when our bodies become a combination of what was there to begin with and machines that help everything work better. When that first human being gets implanted with micro machines that intelligently help his systems to function at optimal level, that will indeed be a Sputnik Moment where an instant, we all realize that something profound has changed in the world of humans will never again be as it had been.

Thousands of medical researchers like this judgment are moving in that direction and working independently and together, I believe they will succeed.
