After you press button use the rod in key items pocket, you will hold the rod, focus on the message box, once the message 'oh! It's a bite!' message appear simultaneously hit your A button ONCE, not more, just once and fast, keep doing it until pokemon is hooked and start battle.

Berry will produce indigo color pokeblocks which will rise up beauty and tough rating of you pokemon, Kelpsy and Cornn berry will do, get it from berry master and plant it to get more.
