Description from the creator

Making a Native American headdress from scratch — the complete build in one video, from the first bead on the loom to the last feather on the bonnet. Around 30 hours of work, condensed.

🛠️ HOW IT WAS MADE

Four techniques, none of which I had used before.

The beadwork came first and took the longest — I drew two patterns, kept the one I preferred, then built a bead loom out of scrap plywood, cut, glued and screwed together. Nothing fancy. Threading it took longer than beading it.

The feathers are goose, not eagle. Big, medium and small, sorted, trimmed and mounted with cotton fabric, cotton thread and leather. A little CA glue and activator to speed up the assembly — optional if you want a fully traditional build.

The bonnet is hide, sized on a mannequin head padded out to my own measurements using Andy Birkey's skullcap. Patterned, cut, sewn, then wetted and stretched where it pulled. A good amount of oil to keep it supple.

The ornaments are rabbit fur, beads, cotton thread, hide strips, veg tan leather for the beadwork backing, and two discs cut by hand from 0.5mm steel sheet and drilled through the centre.

Then everything comes together on the bonnet, feather by feather. First time I had attempted anything like it, and I am still happy with how it turned out.

🪶 ABOUT THIS BUILD

A war bonnet is not a costume. Among the Plains Nations it is earned regalia — feathers granted for acts of courage and service — and it carries a meaning no craft project can borrow. I built this one out of admiration, not entitlement.

As a kid in France I discovered Native American craftsmanship through the films our TV showed on Sunday nights, and the skill in those pieces never left me. This series is a study of that skill: the loom beadwork, the featherwork, the hide sewing. It is a tribute to the people who developed those techniques, and to nothing else.

This piece was never made as a Halloween outfit, a disguise or a cosplay, and it is not presented as one. No eagle feathers were used — every feather here is goose, bought, not taken.

If you are Native and something in this build is careless or wrong, tell me in the comments. I would rather learn than repeat a mistake.
