Honor your wedding guests by following the proper etiquette in addressing your invitations.

Step 1: Plan the timeline
Implement a timeline. Invitations should be addressed and sent out six to eight weeks prior to the ceremony.

Tip
Invitations should be neatly handwritten, rather than typed.

Step 2: Use titles
Use full names and titles on the outer envelopes. A married couple would be 'Mr. and Mrs. John Doe." It is also acceptable to include the wife’s first name.

Tip
Many invitations include an inner envelope that notes specifically who is invited, or indicates a specific individual 'and guest.' If your invitations don’t have an inner envelope, include this information on the outer envelope.

Step 3: Include children
List children’s names, from oldest to youngest, on the inner envelope, if they are invited. Children over 18 living in the same household should be sent a separate invitation.

Step 4: List occupational titles
List the person with an occupational title – such as doctor or judge – first, regardless of gender.

Step 5: List friends first
Address the person you know better first when inviting unmarried couples, regardless of gender.

Step 6: Avoid abbreviations
Avoid abbreviations. Words such as "Street" and "Avenue" should be written out.
