How to Become a Food Scientist

A food scientist can work in the food processing industry, as well as in a university or a government office. Some of the duties of a food scientist include developing new food products and analyzing ways to process, package and store different types of foods.

Method 1: Follow Education and Training Requirements

1
Apply to an accredited college or university that offers degrees in food science or agricultural science. Start by pursuing a bachelor's degree.

2
Take courses that adhere to the degree's curriculum requirements.
Common courses include plant or crop science, nutrition, food analysis, food chemistry, food engineering, food processing operations and food microbiology.

3
Pursue an advanced food science degree. Obtain a master's degree or a PhD to qualify for teaching or advanced research positions.
Graduate programs often require students to complete classroom studies and fieldwork, to conduct lab research and to write a thesis or dissertation to qualify for a master's or a PhD program.

Method 2 : Assess Careers in Food Science

1
Search online or at the college career center for job openings related to food science. Consider researching food industry organizations, such as the Institute of Food Technologists, for information on career outlook and job openings.

2
Determine your preferred work environment. Besides the federal government and universities, apply for food scientist jobs in office and laboratory settings.

3
Review application requirements for job openings related to food science. Submit a cover letter, resume and other materials, as requested by the company.
