Description from the creator

WHAT IS YERBA MATE?
Yerba Mate is an uplifting and energizing herb indigenous to the Amazon and is widely popular throughout parts of
South America for its robust flavor. Often thought of as the “tea” of Latin America, yerba mate is one of just four
botanicals in the Americas to contain cafeine.

MATE (pronounced mah-teh) is a drink made by steeping dried leaves from the yerba mate plant in hot water.

WHAT DOES IT TASTE LIKE?
Yerba Mate has a bittersweet, earthy and mineral flavor with nuances of olive leaf and eucalyptus. Traditional
roasting and aging of yerba mate creates pleasant, toasted aromas ranging from tobacco to oak.

HOW IS IT BREWED?
Yerba Mate is traditionally brewed and served in a hollow gourd (itself called a mate) and consumed through a
metal straw called a bombilla (pronounced bome-bee-zha; see other side for instructional). The gourd provides an
ideal environment for the leaves to develop nutrients when brewing. However, with adjustments to the procedure,
yerba mate can be easily brewed in contemporary vessels such as a French press and a Simple Brew teapot.
Regardless of the brewing method, yerba mate leaves should briefly sit in a small amount of cool or room
temperature water before hot water is added. This water helps temper the leaves, protecting its nutrients from the
heat of the hot water, therefore, maintaining the tea’s flavor & integrity.
