We all have the problem of how to seal MDF edges on shelves, and whilst I was on a building site recently I happened to see a shelf leaning up against a wall, that was part of a wardrobe being constructed by a high end, bespoke carpentry business.

The shelf was constructed from MDF but it had a pine edge glued to the front, which had been routed along the top and bottom edge to create an incredibly smart, professional decorate edge.

I was inspired by this to create my own shelves in a similar way, and so this video is the result! These shelves not only look smart, but they also solve the problem of how to paint end grain, whether that is on MDF or in my case here, 25mm exterior ply.

TODAY'S TOOLKIT
- block plane. There are various new block planes on the market (Stanley, Irwin) with mixed reviews, but your best bet would be to buy a second hand one on eBay, as vintage block planes are much better quality with better blades than the new ones
- biscuit jointer Erbauer bit.ly/33Zk0Z8 £60
- biscuits
- wood glue
- 1/2 inch shank router (mine is De Walt), but there are a wide range of routers on the market, but if you're new to routing, you might consider the lighter, less powerful 1/4 inch shank router, as this is a great way to get started and to familiarise yourself with routing
- beading large bit from Wealdon Tools (code T2503B-1/2)
bit.ly/2HEECxR £29.40
- Peter Millard gave me the idea for buying this router bit in this video youtube.com/watch?v=4fkO3LoV8L4
- Ryobi circular saw geni.us/htOf (Amazon) (bare unit - no battery) *
- Irwin jack floorboard saw geni.us/5hSp (Amazon) *
