How to Eliminate Tear Stains on Cats and Dogs

► Tear stains are a common occurrence on many dogs and cats that are characterized by dark reddish, brown crusty discoloration around a pet's eyes, muzzle, and even paws. Tear stains are difficult to eradicate and frustrating to pet owners because of the negative cosmetic consequences. Tear stains also cause skin irritation, discomfort for your pet, and even a pungent odor. Environmental, genetic, and bacterial agents, or a combination thereof may contribute to causing tear stains. To eliminate tear stains you take the following steps in the logical order of the likely causes ✔

► Tips
+ Use good daily hygiene on your pet’s face. The crusty, messy “stuff” that accumulates around your pet’s eyes can be removed by gently wiping a soft cloth soaked in lukewarm water from the inside corner of the pet’s eye outward toward the tip of the nose. When you have done this several times, you may want to finish up by, again – “gently” combing the hairs with the same “inside out to the nose” motion using a small, fine tooth, flea comb. This will NOT eliminate the permanent staining, but will help reduce irritation and the odor that is associated often with tear stains ✔

► Warnings
+ Do not use bleaches, whiteners, or peroxide on the hairs around your pet's eyes. No matter how careful you are, it can wick up into the eye and cause serious irritation and damage ✔
