How to Get Free Games on Xbox Live

This video walks you through how you can get free games on Xbox Live with your Gold subscription. Your Xbox Live Gold membership gives you access to a handful of free games every month.

Hi. I'm Max Dalton, and in this video I'm going to talk through how you can access a regular feed of free games on your Xbox One.

One of the more hidden benefits of having an Xbox Live Gold account is that Microsoft makes a handful of games available for free every month for these users to download. You'll never find a blockbuster new release in this list, but you can find some games that have been critically acclaimed in the last couple of years, and great newer games you would never have took a chance on otherwise. If you're a parent, this is also a great way to load your console up on games for your kids at no cost. Once you download the games, they are yours forever and there's no cost to re-download them at any point in the future if you delete them.

The first thing you'll need to do is verify your Xbox Live Gold membership using the following steps.

Step 1. Turn on your Xbox One console. You'll arrive at the home screen.

Step 2. Use your controller to highlight your username that appears in the upper left corner of the screen, and then click "A." A menu appears.

Step 3. Use your left analog stick to highlight the "System" icon in the row of icons along the top of the menu. The System icon looks like a gear. The System menu appears.

Step 4. Select "Settings" in the System menu. The Account screen appears.

Step 5. Ensure "Account" is selected in the list of options on the left side of the screen, and then choose "Subscriptions" on the right side of the screen. A screen appears prompting you for the password for your Microsoft account. Enter the password, and then press the "Start" button on your controller. A Subscriptions screen appears, displaying active and cancelled subscriptions that have been associated with your Xbox Live account.

Step 6. Locate the Xbox Live subscription, and verify that you have an active Xbox Live Gold subscription.

Now that you've verified that your Xbox Live Gold subscription is active, we can find the most recent free games available to Gold subscribers for you to download.

Step 1. Navigate back to the Xbox One home screen, and then select "Store" in the menu row running across the top of the screen.

Step 2. Move down using the left analog stick to navigate into the Store menu. Locate and select "Memberships." The Memberships screen appears, showing you a list of games you either have access to or can get special deals on based on any memberships you have.

Step 3. Scroll down to the Xbox Live Gold section. Games that are available for you to download for free and keep forever can be found in this section. When you click any of those games to see more information, you'll see a message that says the game is free wiht your Xbox Live Gold membership, and the period of time for which it will be available to you for free. There is never any cost to you for the game, and it's yours to keep forever.
