Learning how to stop on the ice is probably the most useful skill to develop. Once you've master the stop in one direction, its always a great idea to learn it in the other way around. There are tones of different reasons to why learning to stop in both directions is useful:

Hockey players need to learn all skills in both directions (left and right, weak side and strong side)

This still is also useful for general skaters and it makes you a better and more confident and proficient skater.
