We want you to know everything about the care and wear of your braces. Our goal is to help you understand and feel comfortable with the treatment process so you may enjoy your orthodontic experience.

To achieve a healthy and happy smile lets start by reviewing you Home care kit. In your home care kit there are a lot of dental items to help you with your home care. There is a toothbrush, floss, floss threaders, proxabrush, wax, a food list and a hygiene guide card.

Brushing your Teeth
Good dental hygiene starts with good regular brushing in a circler motion and we recommend three times a day or after each meal. Always include the top of the braces, bottom of the braces and the front of the braces and brush for around two minutes every time.

Flossing with Braces
When you have braces you will need to thread your floss under the arch wire. To help you do that you can use a floss threader.

Using the Proxabrush
The proxabrush should be used between the teeth and the arch wire to remove food particles, reduce plaque and stimulate your gums. Don't force the proxabrush or you could break a bracket.

Visiting you Dentist
We recommend you should see your dentist at least three times a year while you are in braces.

Orthodontic Wax
As you are getting used to your braces you may start feeling some sore spots on the inside of your cheeks. If this happens you can use orthodontic wax to cover the part of the braces that is causing you discomfort. You will need to take off the wax before eating and brushing. However should you accidentally swallow any wax, don't worry, it's not harmful to you.

Treating Discomfort
Some patients experience a dull achey sensation after getting braces on, or after each adjustment. Motrin, Tylenol or a similar types of medication can help relieve the discomfort. A cup of warm salt water or Orajel can also provide effective pain relief while you are getting used to your braces.

Accident Happen
Should you break a band, brace or wire save any braces and bring them in to your next appointment. Be sure to call the office the next working day to schedule your repair appointment.

Food to Avoid
You should avoid hard, crunchy foods that can damage or break your braces. Avoid hard nuts, pretzels, meat on bones and biting on ice. Remember to cut up your hard fruits and vegetables into bite size chunks and place them in your mouth instead of biting into them.
We recommend you also avoid sticky, chewy foods like caramels, taffy and chewing gum etc.

The Food You Can Eat
The good news is there are still plenty of good foods and treats for you to eat including chocolate bars, cakes, pies and soft cookies and many more foods like these.

Please remember many of these foods are high in sugar, so be sure to brush good after eating them!
