Bay rum aftershave is traditionally made by a complex distillation process, but you can prepare your own batch using this simplified recipe.
Step 1: Place some bay leaves in a jar
Place some leaves of the West Indian bay tree, called Pimenta racemosa, in a wide mouth Mason jar.
Tip
Don't use bay laurel leaves from the supermarket or you'll end up smelling like soup stock.
Step 2: Add spices
Add some cloves, crushed allspice berries, and grated ginger to the jar.
Step 3: Fill the jar with vodka and rum
Fill the jar with a mixture of 5 parts vodka to 1 part Jamaican dark rum and cover the jar with a tightly fitting lid.
Step 4: Let the mixture sit
Let the rum, leaves, and spices sit in the jar for several weeks in a cool, dark place -- but not a refrigerator! The alcohol will extract the oil from the bay leaves.
Step 5: Filter the liquid
Filter the liquid through coffee filters until all of the residue is gone. Then place it in an attractive bottle. Splash some on the next time you go out on the town and watch heads turn.
