Welcome to Discount Quality Stairs. In this video we will show you how to properly measure your stairs so that you can accurately use our online stair builder.

Whether you're building or remodeling and don't have stairs in the house yet or even if you have stairs that you want to replace, this video will be helpful to you and we'll show you how to measure for stairs that are either existing or non-existing.

As a rule of thumb, you may want to have your tools ready to go. We recommend that you start with a retractable measuring tape, a Level or laser level, and a pencil but there may be additional tools that you want to use as well and that's fine.
Let's start off by defining some terms that will help you understand the process.

How to measure stairs

First, the Header. The header is a large, flat piece of wood that is installed in the opening at the top of the stairs. It connects the two walls and provides the foundation on which your top stair will rest.

The header provides stability and there are many headers already in your house at the top of your windows, and doors.

Next, the Tread. The tread is the part of the staircase that is stepped on. It's the horizontal area of the stair.

The risers. The Risers are the vertical part of the stairs that connects the treads. It's the "up" part of the stairs.

When combined with the treads, the risers make the stair steps.
Finally, the stringers. The Stringers are the backbone of you're your stair case and provide support for your risers and treads. The stringers are typically installed on each side and the middle of the stairs.

Now that we have a little bit of a foundation, let's take a look at how to measure the stairs for our online stair builder.

In order to do this properly, you are going to need 5 different measurements.

You'll need to measure the total rise, the width of the closed portion of the stair, the width of the open portion of the stair, the wall break measurement, and the total run.

There are also additional measurements that you will see listed as "optional" in our online stair builder. We will not cover those option measurements in this video.
It's important to know that these measurements are consistent for all major types of stairs.

To understand the different types of stairs you can visit our website at discount quality stairs dot com and click on the online stair builder.
From there you'll find the type of staircase that best explains what you're looking for and you'll select the type of wood that you'd like to use for the project.
