Measuring your stairs for flooring can be a daunting task.
But, it’s actually much simpler than you’d think.
Most staircases are up to a metre wide, with 14 stairs, and measure around 8 metres top to bottom if you follow the zig-zag of the stairs.
If your staircase fits this description and you’re laying carpet, a two by four metre piece is perfect.
For staircases that are close to, or exactly, one metre by eight metres, add an extra 50 centimetres to ensure you definitely have enough.
If your staircase has any curves, add 0.5 metres per curve.
You should also add an extra half metre for patterned carpets, on top of any additional for curves, to ensure a consistent design on your staircase.
For staircases larger than this standard size, we recommend getting in touch with the professionals to make sure you get the most for your money.
If you’re covering your stairs in wood or laminate, you’ll need to work out your staircase in square metres.
Here’s how to get your exact measurements.
Visualise each step as two rectangles; the ‘riser’ and ‘tread’.
Firstly, measure the width of the tread. This is the wall-to-wall measurement of the piece of step you walk on.
Take a piece of plain paper and make a note of the measurement.
Then, measure the length of both the tread and the riser.
Now that you have the measurements you need, you can visualise a rectangle.
Add the tread and riser measurements together, and multiply it by the width measurement you took earlier.
This will give you the area of each stair in square centimetres. Then divide this by 10,000 to get the area in square metres.
Then simply times this area by the number of stairs you have, and you’ll be left with the final area you need to cover with your flooring.
For stairs, we suggest you allow for wastage by adding 15% to your total.
