Learn how to propagate thyme using two simple and reliable methods: growing thyme from cuttings and propagating thyme by layering.

Thyme is one of the easiest herbs to grow and propagate. Whether you want more plants for the vegetable garden, herb garden, containers or as a fragrant ground cover, these techniques will help you create new plants at virtually no cost.

In this video you'll learn:

✔ How to take thyme cuttings
✔ The best cutting length for propagation
✔ Whether rooting hormone is needed
✔ How to create a simple mini greenhouse
✔ How long thyme cuttings take to root
✔ How to propagate thyme by layering
✔ Tips for creating bushier thyme plants

Steps for propagating thyme from cuttings:

Take healthy 10cm cuttings
Remove any flowers
Strip foliage from the lower section
Dip in rooting hormone or honey (optional)
Use a dibbler to make planting holes
Insert cuttings and firm the soil
Water well
Cover with a clear plastic bottle
Mist regularly to maintain humidity

Most thyme cuttings will begin rooting within 4 to 6 weeks under suitable conditions.

You can also propagate thyme by layering. Simply pin a low-growing stem onto the soil and allow it to develop roots while still attached to the parent plant.
