HOW TO QUIT YOUR JOB LIKE A PROFESSIONAL | Sophie Shohet

THINKING OF QUITTING YOUR JOB AND DREADING THE “I’M LEAVING” MEETING? OR PERHAPS YOU’VE ALREADY HANDED-IN YOUR NOTICE AND ARE WORKING YOUR FINAL DAYS NOW. In this video I share some tips on how to professionally quit your job, get along with people at work, provide constructive feedback and get through your final days with minimum stress for the benefit of your career. No one likes telling an employer that they're leaving, even if you’ve had a rough time or are simply ready for a new change – it’s like dumping a partner….even if you can’t stand them anymore, it’s not a nice thing to have to do!

I once worked for a company where I was told that when an employee gave notice, it felt to the company like someone was saying their child was ugly! What this means is that it’s equally taken personally in most cases and especially if you are a valued team member, it can be a hard thing to hear for an employer!

This video is slightly more aimed at those who are disgruntled and have had a not to good time. I hope it provides helpful advice on how not to loose your cool and walk away with your reputation and dignity in tact!

Sometimes it’s best not to give any feedback when you leave, this is true if you work in a culture where you know it won’t be taken onboard and will likely cause you problems as you work your final days. More often than not, employers know what the problems are. Your decision on what to say or what not to say is based on your unique experiences of course.

Finally, if you have perhaps not seen eye to eye with a superior – ask yourself the question: Have they really taken a personal dislike, or could it be that I could have done a better job/taken their direction better?

This may be an uncomfortable question to ask yourself, and I am not discounting that sometimes it is personal! People won’t like you!
But being totally honest about whether any of the friction might have been down to you, only helps YOU in the long term. Ask for honest feedback before you leave and work on addressing these in your new role.
