How to Repair a Leaky Aquarium
ChannelHow to do AnythingDescription from the creator
► A leaky aquarium tank can be a big problem. Most leaks only spill a little water at a time. If this problem isn't fixed, it can lead to the whole aquarium breaking or wasting a lot of water ✔
► Tips
+ You may try to repair the leak from the outside of the tank, but usually the repair is more effective if made on the inside, since water pressure will "tighten" the seal pressing the silicone out, against the glass, but pushes it away from the glass when applied from the outside.
+ Very large aquariums have more water, hence more pressure on the seams, and can be very difficult to repair
+ You may use a heat lamp or other portable heat source to help cure the sealant, but do not heat above 110 degrees (F).
+ Don't hurry important jobs!
+ Check with a professional aquarium supply for recommended repair products. Make sure that if you use silicone, it is labeled "nontoxic" and "100% silicone". Also make sure that the silicone sealant has NO fungicide in it and is a High Modulus product. Choose the appropriate colour, usually, Clear, White or Black. (GE Silicone 1* Clear is best)
+ Silicone sometimes does not bond well with old silicone. You may end up having to completely remove all silicone on the inside of the tank (not including what's between the glass panes) and reseal all the seams at one time. If your already draining, drying, and scraping silicone you might as well do the whole thing ✔
► Warnings
+ Do not attempt to move an aquarium which is filled with water, the movement may cause the seams to distort and the aquarium to leak or burst.
+ Never use solvent based glues on aquariums ✔
