If you have an older gate-style water valve that has an active leak then it is probably a good idea to replace it with a quarter turn ball-style valve. You can do it with about an hour of your time for less than $50 in parts. A plumber will charge you $200 to do the same repair. It is a fairly simple task as long as you have the desire to do it.
