If you discover a water leak in your home, or you need to replace valves under a sink during a remodel, you'll need to shut off the water main for your house. Here I'll show three common examples of how to do this, in a house with city water, in a condo with city water, and in a house with a private well. I'll also discuss some of the "gotchas" to be aware of when things go wrong. Gate style valves, which are commonly used for water mains, are prone to failure and may not shut down completely or open back up. Ball style valves are superior and I''ll show an example of that style too.
