There are plenty of great apps available that you can use to apply a comic book filter to your iPhone photos. However, if you don't want to deal with a third-party app, Apple now provides a comic book filter you can use -- even if it's not super convenient. In this video, I'll show you how to access Apple's comic book filter through the Messages app.
Now let's walk through the steps to access the comic book filter in iOS.
Step 1. Tap to launch the "Messages" app on your iPhone. Your Messages home screen appears, displaying a list of your conversations.
Step 2. Tap the "New Message" icon in the upper right corner of the screen. The New Message icon features a silhouette of a piece of paper with a pencil on it. The New Message window appears.
Step 3. Enter the name of a recipient in the To field. You won't actually send the message, but you can't proceed with tapping the Camera icon unless you have a designated recipient.
Step 4. Now tap the "Camera" icon that appears to the left of the field where you would typically input a message. The Camera screen appears.
Step 5. Tap the "Effects" icon in the lower left corner of the screen. The Effects buttons looks like a star. A row of available effects icons appear directly beneath the picture preview screen.
Step 6. Tap the icon that features three dots: red, green, and blue. A row of different filter options appears.
Step 7. Scroll through the list of filters until you find the Comic Book filter. The Comic Book filter should be the second filter from the left.
Step 8. Tap the "X" that appears above the row of filters and directly beneath the right corner of the filter options after selecting Comic Book to close the filter options. The Take Picture button will reappear.
Step 9. Tap the "Take Picture" button to take a picture through the Comic Book filter. Options will appear for Edit, Markup, and Send To.
Step 10. Tap "Done" in the upper right corner of the screen. You'll return to your conversation thread, and the picture you took with the Comic Book filter will automatically appear ready to send in the message field. Tap "Cancel" in the upper right corner of the screen to cancel that message thread if you don't want to send that picture, or back out of that conversation.
Step 11. Close the Messages app and open the Photos app. The picture you took with the comic book filter will be available in the Photos app.
