Description from the creator

Video tutorial on how to knit a checkerboard dishcloth shadow knitting (or illusion knitting). The checkerboard pattern is visible when the knitted work is held at an angle. The pattern for both versions of the dishcloths shown in the video is provided below.
Level: beginner

Materials:
Yarn: 1 skein each (2.5-3 oz or 75-90 g) of 100% cotton yarn (like Sugar-n-Lily or Peaches & Cream brands) in a lighter color (main color) and in a darker color (contrasting color). Note: the higher the contrast between the 2 colors, the better visibility of the pattern when work is held at an angle.
Needles: US size 6 (4 mm) regular knitting needles
Notions: Tapestry needle, scissors
Abbreviations: CC=contrasting color; MC=main color; K=knit; P=purl; st=stitch

With MC, cast on 40 sts using long-tail cast on or cast on method of your choice (for smaller version: cast on 35 sts). Then knit first section of the checkerboard as follows:
First section:
Row 1 (right side): With CC, K all sts.
Row 2 (wrong side): With CC, K8, P8, K8, P8, K8 (for smaller version: K7, P7, K7, P7, K7).
Row 3: With MC, K all sts.
Row 4: With MC, P8, K8, P8, K8, P8 (for smaller version: P7, K7, P7, K7, P7)
Repeat Rows 1-4 two more times for first section (total 12 rows). Then do second section of the checkerboard as follows:
Second section:
Row 1 (right side): With CC, K all sts.
Row 2 (wrong side): With CC, P8, K8, P8, K8, P8 (for smaller version: P7, K7, P7, K7, P7).
Row 3: With MC, K all sts.
Row 4: With MC, K8, P8, K8, P8, K8 (for smaller version: K7, P7, K7, P7, K7)
Repeat Rows 1-4 two more times for second section (total 12 rows).

Repeat first and second section of checkerboard pattern two more times for the larger version (total 6 sections) (for smaller version: Repeat first and second sections 1 more time, then repeat first section once more – total 5 sections).

Then bind off sts using MC and weave in yarn ends using tapestry needle. May block the piece to flatten out the edges. Finished sizes: larger dishcloth is an 8.5 x 8.5 in square and the smaller one is 7.5 x 7.5 square.
