How to get a signed Picasso for 100 euro
ChannelAP ArchiveDescription from the creator
(10 Mar 2020) LEAD IN:
Time is almost running out to pick up a raffle ticket for a signed oil painting by world renowned artist Pablo Picasso
Costing 100 euro per ticket, the lucky winner will get Picasso's "Nature Morte" estimated to be worth 2-3 million US dollars and currently owned by a billionaire art collector from Monaco
Proceeds from the raffle, set for the end of March, will go to a charity which aims to bring clean water to communities in Africa.
STORY-LINE:
This painting in subdued oil colours signed by Pablo Picasso is estimated to be worth between 2 and 3 million US dollars.
At the end of this month (March 2020) for the price of 100 euro raffle ticket one lucky person will be its new owner.
Money raised from the raffle will go to charity.
The painting named "Nature Morte", French for still life, is on display at the Picasso museum in Paris.
Eric Christensen, a teacher from New York, already owns a few of Picasso's drawings and would love to own a painting.
"I would love to own an original Picasso piece. I do have a couple of his sketches on my wall at home. This is an original painting, although it is not my favourite it is still an original piece by him," he says.
Kristy Leonard, a midwife, who is also from the United States says although she likes the painting and finds it peaceful, she would be worried about security if she won it.
"Well, it would be a really good deal if I won it. I would be really concerned about burglary in my home, so where would I keep it? I actually like this one in particular, because I like the colours. It is very peaceful and calm when I first look at it."
Not everyone is interested in entering the raffle.
Peter Belton, a retired scientist originally from Norwich in the United Kingdom, says 100 eurod is too steep a price to pay.
"No, I wouldn't take part in the raffle. I mean I would love to own a Picasso, but the odds of actually getting it are so small that I am not prepared to bet a hundred Euros on it. You can do a lot with a hundred Euros - you get a fantastic meal here for a hundred Euros. You know you could maybe buy a small picture for a hundred Euros. So, there are lots of other things you could do. Or you might just, if you wanted to support the cause, you might simply give them a hundred Euros, " he says.
This is the second raffle of its kind.
The first one was held in 2013 and was won by a 25-year-old project manager from Pennsylvania.
The proceeds of the 2013 raffle were 5 million euros (around 5.6 million US dollars) and were donated to charity.
The draw is being held in Paris on March 30.
Organisers Péri Cochin, a television producer, and Arabelle Reille, an art historian, aim to sell 200,000 tickets, raising 20 million euros.
"Picasso is the most famous artist ever, everywhere where you go in the world, you go to the far east to the west coast, anywhere you go everyone knows who Picasso is. Even if you don't know the work of Picasso, into details, you know who Picasso is...you have heard about Picasso. I think he is the most famous," says Cochin.
The proceeds will go to Care, a non-governmental organisation, which will use the money to provide clean water, toilets and washing facilities for 200,000 people in three African countries, Cameroon, Morocco and Madagascar.
"Bringing clean water to all those people in Africa they needed twenty million euros. So, this twenty million euros means two hundred thousand tickets."
So far the raffle sales have not reached the halfway target, but Cochin guarantees that there will be a winner even if not all the 200,000 tickets are sold.
