Here’s the Iowa real estate licensing process in a nutshell:

1. Background Check. We encourage everyone to start by sending in their background check, which takes several weeks to process.

2. Interview brokerages. Find out which brokerages have the right support system, tools and culture for you.

3. Take the 60-hour licensing course. You can take it through one of several in-person or online options available.

4. Pass the licensing exam. Don’t worry, you can handle this part if you paid attention during the 60-hour class.

5. Complete the 36-hour buyer, seller, and professional ethics and standards classes.

6. Choose a brokerage to partner with.

7. Apply for Errors and Omissions insurance.

8. Submit the license application.

9. Join a local MLS and become a REALTOR®.
